Its Saturday night and I'm working

Yep, I got to come into work at 10:30 tonight, and probably won't get to leave until 12:30-1:00. We've got a network maintenance window (we get like 4-5 hours per quarter to take critical servers and network equipment off line) and me and one other guy are migrating like 120 ports from one switch to our core service switch. Sounds easy, but its a mess. They're big 'ol Cisco 7506 and 7510 switches so we have to trace all the cables back from the patch panels to the switch ports, make note of the port, then migrate the cable to a port on the new switch (and pray to god the cable is long enough or we have to re-route and cable it), back to the other patch panel, copy over a config file, then do it 119 more times. I've got 10 minutes till we can start, so I'm off to get some caffeine in my system.

EDIT: 12:30-1:00 was a bad estimate, I didn't get home until 3:45am.

Back Home

Well, we survived another Christmas in Bismarck. Drank too much, ate too much, etc. It was fun, but its good to be home. We had good weather traveling the whole way. It was a little sloppy once we hit the cities but we didn't really think anything of it until we got home and there was eight inches of snow on our deck! Our neighbor must have blown it off our driveway for us while we were gone, but our back yard was totally buried. It proceeded to snow another 2-3 inches last night and today, so I got to bust out the almighty Snow Chief once again. I love that damn snowblower like it was my child. Its from the 70's, loud, smells like gas something fierce and shoots blue flames out of the muffler when its really rockin, but it always starts on the first pull and has pretty much paid for itself 5 times already this season. In fact, I've composed a haiku about my feelings for the Snow Chief:

Oh Lovely Snow Chief
Sleek-ish Curves and Bright Red Paint
Blue Flames Warm my Soul

So we got another 4-5 inches of snow today and the cites were a total disaster. I've never seen traffic like this afternoon. It generally takes me 15 minutes to get home with no traffic, and with a little like 25. It took me 2 hours to get home today and I wound up cutting across a median and taking a frontage road to a back road through bloomington. If I would have stayed 5 to 494 I would still be on the road. In fact, the main road that runs by our house is still backed up for 3-4 miles. God damn, put 3 million people on the road at once with a couple inches of snow and you have a mess.

In brighter news, thanks to PW I got my Yakima rack for the Element. She's looking tough with the new faring. I'm going to try and get a pic of it tomorrow. And as a birthday present to myself (I always give myself the best presents) I picked up a T61 Thinkpad. She's pretty sweet, totally unnecessary but sweet none the less. Heres what it looks like:

Bear's first snow

The Bear was from down south, and moved up here when it was warm so he's never seen snow. Today we got like 5-6 inches so he's been freaking out. Sara caught a little video of him.
